Is It Safe For Me To Share My Personal Information

Q. Is it safe for me to share my personal information on the Community Network?

A. It is up to you how much of your personal information you would like to share with fellow Community Network participants. Only members of the Community Network will be able to find the information. It will not show up on Google searches or the like, because the Community Network is an Intranet (see What is an Intranet?) and invisible to the general public and the World Wide Web.

You may wish to be available for contact from your fellow Members (see Who is on the Our Giving Community[new page]?) via mail, phone or fax. Some reasons that you may be contacted include:

  • a Member wishes to provide a mother with a contact in your vicinity (someone is moving to your area, etc.)
  • a Members is looking for a fellow Members with a certain expertise (if you indicate you have a collection of antique teacups, for example, Members might contact you for information or references)
  • a Members who is moving to your community wants to make contact with her future colleagues
  • a group of Members is starting a project similar to one you have undertaken and would like to get some input from you.

For these reasons, you may wish to list your contact information. Even if you choose not to include optional contact information about yourself, a Members who needs to contact you will always be able to send you an email message from your profile page. You still retain your privacy in this situation, as your email address does not show up when someone clicks the Email so-and-so link. It will only appear if you respond via email from your email software.

You can always revise your settings by going to My Page or My Profile links near the top of any Community Network page and clicking the Edit Basic Information link above the display of information about yourself.
